It is probably an understatement to say the last few years have been interesting times, and just when you think the last big wave has passed and you can settle into normality, here comes another one to test your surfing skills ?

Amid the usual suspects, one of these monster waves has been the recent slew of layoffs in the digital industries. Pull any of the top fifty companies out the hat and you can be sure most of them are undergoing a period of churn right now.

If you are a developer just starting out, you might be wondering, or worried, about your future. Well, stop worrying. Our industry is expanding and thriving, and the skill you are perfecting right now is the proverbial skeleton key to any door that takes your fancy to open. We are bigger than rockstars and the wizards of our time, revel in your chosen craft, roll up your sleeves and go get 'em!

In addition to the usual bug fixes to accompany GameGuru Classic, we had the good fortune to see some contributions from the coding community in Classic land with the introduction of video textures on entity surfaces. A huge thanks to Cybernecence, Teabone and Preben for their continued contributions, and a special nod to Cybernecence who went that extra mile to provide all Classic users with the ability to play animations within their games.

We are planning a public update later in March to ensure your version stays stable and able to provide the tools you need to make great games

As always – you can catch us for our YouTube live broadcast every Wednesday at 7pm GMT/2pm EST/10am PST for the latest news about GameGuru Classic and GameGuru MAX and chat live with the dev team!

Right off the bat we wanted to share the news that our New Year refocus to tackle the high bug count in the current early access build is going very well and we’ve brought the GameGuru MAX bug count down from 475 in late January to 367 as we go to press. That's over 100 bugs sorted, around a quarter of all extant bugs.

Thanks to feedback from third party artists busily making new asset packs for you, we've added some features that make their lives, and by extension, your lives, much more organised with a new project-specific media folder system to keep game-specific content tied to your project.

We also added a media hot swapping capability so you can edit models, textures and object settings, that then instantly change in the level you are working on! So no need to leave and relaunch the software - saving you time.

Still on the dev front, we bowed to the number of overwhelming requests (Ed – see we do listen!) for Parallax Occlusion Mapping and have enabled this feature for artists and game authors alike who want to take advantage of this excellent visual effect. Now simple flat surfaces can be transformed into appearing to comprise thousands of additional polygons with the simple addition of a height map texture. We look forward to releasing new DLC asset packs with this additional capability!

Finally, we all need some exciting audio and music for our game creations and our latest collaboration with the very talented audio artist YcarusRedCore was released in February on Steam.

The Audio Ambience Booster Pack is available for GameGuru MAX and offers over 190, custom-made loopable music tracks, sounds, jingles, voice and atmospheric effects covering a wide range of genres for your game design needs – take a look!

Talking about DLC! Thanks to a dedicated team of third party artists who are working hard behind the scenes, we've got some really exciting new DLC's in the works too. First up, are some great assets from MonkeyFrog, focusing on Cyberpunk Streets and featuring a load of assets, many with animated textures to bring those streets to life.

Second up, is another exciting pack based on Victorian Streets which will be ideal for those of you looking to create a Sherlock Holmes or Lovecraftian themed game, or wanting to expand on the more normal side of Steampunk. This great pack from new artist Pasquill is sure to add a ton of useful media.

Both of these packs will be available in the near future for GameGuru MAX, so keep an eye out on Steam for more information or for a release announcement in an upcoming newsletter ?

In other AppGameKit news, there's a wonderful game created with AppGameKit Classic called Conquistador, developed by Geo Games. It's an amazing example of what you can achieve with AppGameKit and is available HERE to download for free ?

GAME JAM TIME!

This month we're going to take a look at a single artist, Lafette, who has been consistently active on The Game Creator Store in the GameGuru Classic world.

His Big Industrial Plant is an amazing value pack of over 160 items

Add to this his Railway Construction Pack, you can add even more to your industrial themed games

Finally, if you're looking for just one more industrial asset, you'll also find a full animated steam pump in his growing list of work!

You can find the complete list of the great artists work on the Game Creator Store HERE

Our guest dev in this edition is Anthony Boggle Cox

Anthony is an old-time programmer from the 80’s (Ed: his words!) based in the UK. He studied basic and assembly programming at college, working on the very old BBC micros and then moved on to Kitchen design where he was involved in inputting 3D CAD in to Apple macs before CAD had even been invented!

His initial foray into game-making was when he came across DarkBasic and he developed his very first game ‘KPAC’, which has since been lost in data heaven ☹

Anthony has been using AppGameKit Classic for over two years now and has made one full game plus a lot of demos - one of which is TheGameCreators’ VR add pack for AppGameKit as a DLC.

He’s also released a couple of demo games on itch.io; one for VR (VR Pool) and the other is Space Ball, a maze game with some really cool music ?

Anthony says, “I'm currently working on an old retro quake-style game which I’d like to release on Google Play in the future under a retro gaming style game – watch this space! I would also love to go back to college to get my C# programming qualifications - just for fun – but for now I’m fitting everything in between my full-time work as a self-employed PC Engineer, fixing and repairing computers. Work gets in the way!

You can follow Anthony on itch.io or on Facebook ?
